This Week in Music: Joyner Lucas, Alicia Keys, Eminem, & More
Happy Monday everyone and welcome back for another run around the music industry as we check in on some of the biggest headlines from last week. We have some big names in the headlines this week, updates on new releases, and an overall look at some trending news in the industry. Let’s dive in and see what’s going on.
Joyner Lucas Pushes Back the Release of “Evolution”
We talked about the September release for this project last week and then then the Massachusetts based rapper took to Instagram to share that the full album release was being pushed back to October 16th.
In his statement, Lucas stated that several samples used on the tracks had not be cleared and wouldn’t be cleared until October. So, while the project is finished and ready to be heard, the business side of the industry has the project held up.
A defiant and apologetic Lucas ended his post with this, “Please don’t be mad at me ????… October this project is dropping REGARDLESS I promise you”.
We will keep you updated if the release date does end up changing here.
Paul Rosenburg Shuts Down Claims of New Eminem Music
This one is a bit of a less traditional news story, but if you are tuned into the social media rumor mill, then you may have caught it. Okay, so the rumblings all started with this post on Instagram from Graphic Designer Mike Saputo:
Because of this post, many believed that this meant there was some unreleased music from Eminem from a project that didn’t end up being completed.
For fans, this was obviously big news, but unfortunately, it appears like they will have to go back to waiting for the time being. Famed Manager Paul Rosenberg took to Twitter and had this to say:
It’s not all bad though, “Music to Be Murdered By” is only 9 months old after all.
Alicia Keys Opens Up About Her Underdog Story
You can put this one in the inspirational category. Alicia Keys is one of the most celebrated singers of her generation, and she has the 15 Grammy’s to show for it.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, she talked about the meaning behind her song “Underdog”. On the meaning of that song, Keys said this:
“I am that person. The one that wasn’t supposed to make it out of Hell’s Kitchen, who was supposed to end up being a prostitute, a young mother at 16 years old, or addicted to drugs.”
A lot of famous musicians used music as an escape and it’s clear that is true for Alicia and that she hasn’t lost that in all of her success. Putting her success in perspective is a feel-good story to start your week.
Mood (feat. Iann Dior) by 24kGoldn Tops “WAP” On the Spotify Charts
After a dominating few weeks for “WAP”, there is a new number one song on Spotify. Given the fact that this song has now had 6,261,261 streams, it’s safe to assume you are all familiar with it.
For those of you well versed in TikTok, you are probably familiar with the popular dance trend around this song which has certainly not hurt it’s popularity. Just put this song down as another case study in why social media is important for musicians.
At any rate, toppling the mega hit “WAP” is a monumental accomplishment for the 19-year-old rapper from San Francisco. We now have a new king of the charts and we will see how long 24KGoldn can stay on top.
That’s it for this week but check back here next week for another tour around the industry to see what’s going on. In the meantime, go ahead and follow us on Twitter @denovoagency_ for daily news and insights.
