This Week in Music:
Welcome to our first weekly “This Week in Music” Column as we take you around the world of music and touch on the highlights from last week. Going forward, this will be a Sunday piece, but for the first week, we are coming to you on a Wednesday. Enough with the preamble, let’s look at the week that was in the world of Music.
Lil Wayne’s “No Ceilings” Mixtape is Finally on Streaming Platforms
After just over a decade, Lil Wayne’s 2009 mixtape, “No Ceilings” is finally on streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. Though about half of the original songs are missing, Lil Wayne fans can rejoice at finally having this release available to add to their streaming playlists.
A fan favorite that was originally released on Datpiff, certainly took it’s time finding it’s way to major streaming platforms. That said, now that it is finally here, fans can celebrate and even enjoy a new bonus track titled “Kobe Bryant”, which is a fitting ode after the events that ended the NBA legend’s life earlier this year.
The 2020 MTV VMA’s
COVID or not, the 2020 MTV VMA’s went as usual, or as close to it as possible, on Sunday, August, 30th. The big award winner of the night was Lady Gaga who took home five awards on the night including becoming the third straight female to win “Artist of the Year”.
Other highlights included DaBaby ending his performance with a visually dramatic version of “Rockstar”, The Weeknd won Video of the Year for “Blinding Lights“, and Megan Thee Stallion won the Best Hip Hop for “Savage”.
Amazon Music Will Now Allow Fans to Watch Musical Artists When They Are Streaming on Twitch
Musicians are constantly looking for new ways to reach their audiences, especially in today’s pandemic world. This partnership and platform integration creates a way for artists to connect and reach bigger audiences while simultaneously giving them a way to earn more money.
“WAP” (Feat. Megan the Stallion) by Cardi B Remains the Top Track on Spotify
It should be no surprise that the song “WAP”, which is sweeping the globe, is the current number 1 track on Spotify’s United States Top 50 playlist. While this won’t sit well with the Ben Shapiro’s of the world, Cardi B continues to sit on the top of the charts, and Megan Thee Stallion has had herself a nice week.
Check back next week to see if Cardi holds onto the top spot.
