How Spotify Learns Who Your Target Audience Is

Spotify’s algorithm operates by discovering patterns in listening habits to determine what music is a value-add to which listeners.

Elliot Tousley & James Landry have a great discussion here about HOW independent artists can start to generate the data that Spotify feeds off of.

An all too common mistake we see is musicians saying that their target audience is ‘Hip Hop’ or ‘Pop music’ – and your genre is NOT your target audience. When Spotify is able to determine that your music is a value-add for listeners who are A-B years old, in Cities 1, 2 and 3, who listen to artists X, Y, and Z they will deliver your music to them via Discover Weekly, Release Radar, and Daily Mix in order to spread more value to their customers.

They determine what songs are a value to which listeners based on this data and the patterns they’re able to detect in it.
